Milk of magnesia, also known by the generic name magnesium hydroxide, is a medicine that is used as a hydrating laxative and an antacid. It is not a dairy product, but rather a milky-white liquid that is made from magnesium hydroxide, purified water, and sodium hypochlorite. This medicine usually relieves uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms within 30 minutes and constipation within six hours.
milk of magnesia

Treatment of Stomach Discomfort

Magnesium hydroxide is an alkaline suspension, which means that it is able to neutralize acids. When a patient swallows this medicine, the hydroxide ions in it react with the hydrogen ions in stomach acid, transforming both into water. This makes milk of magnesia effective in fighting excess stomach acid, which can cause indigestion, heartburn, and stomach ulcers. When used as an antacid, the usual adult dose is from 0.02 – 0.05 oz (500 mg to 1,500 mg).

Treatment of Constipation

The magnesium in milk of magnesia is what makes it an effective laxative. The mineral ions draw water into the intestinal tract from the surrounding body tissues. This extra water softens and increases the volume of feces, which stimulates the nerves in the intestines and causes a bowel movement. For the treatment of constipation, an adult dose is between 0.07 – 0.18 oz (2,000 mg and 5,000 mg).

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2,200 people die every day due to cardiovascular diseases—that’s 91 people per hour, more than one person per minute. And while it’s common knowledge that moderate exercise helps prevent heart disease, many researchers now believe that high-intensity training is even better. Studies show that this type of training helps the body transport and use oxygen in a more efficient way than traditional exercise does. The evidence is so strong that many doctors and researchers are introducing interval training into the rehabilitation routines of patients recovering from heart failure and bypass surgery.

So this month, we challenge you to take your cardio routine up a notch with some high-intensity interval training. Robert Reames, a Gold’s Gym Fitness Institute Member and head trainer on the Dr. Phil TV show, is a longtime proponent and gave us three routines that take varying lengths of time.
“These are great for your heart, but also great for building muscle,” explains Reames. “They add intensity to any workout and guarantee a healthy calorie afterburn when you’re finished.”

Below you’ll find three speed interval workouts. The level of intensity varies between 1 (lowest) and 10 (highest). “Remember that everyone has their own pace. butterfinger dessert
I have become totally addicted to Pinterest.  I think I might check it as often as my facebook these days...but honestly...you can find sooo much great stuff there.  That is where I found the link to this delicious and easy dessert that literally takes minutes to prepare.  No cooking involved.  My family loved, loved, loved this dish..and so will yours.

This dessert would make a wonderful dish to take to a potluck or a dinner with friends.  Divided up into 16 servings, each serving is 5 points+.

The original recipe used vanilla fat free, sugar free pudding mix..but I subbed butterscotch flavor...and I don't think I would make it any other way.  The butterscotch and the butterfinger flavors were great together, and since you dilute the pudding with quite a bit of cool whip free, it is becomes a very subtle flavor in the "fluff" part of the dessert.

The super simple preparation involves cutting up a pre made angel food cake into cubes.  ( I purchased a cake from my grocer's bakery department)  Then mixing the pudding mix with skim milk and the cool whip free to make a fluff.  Then you just layer the ingredients into a 13 x 9 inch pan.

http://jafiles.net/file/04a5t8Melt the candy corn in the microwave in a medium bowl, stirring every 30 seconds. Continue heating for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between, until melted and smooth. Stir in the peanut butter until equally distributed and smooth. Pour into prepared pan and smooth. Place in the freezer for 10-20 minutes until firm. In the meantime line a large baking sheet with wax paper. Take the chilled bars out of the pan and cut them into mini Butterfinger size bars (I just eyeballed it – you can too!). Melt the chocolate in a clean medium bowl in the microwave stirring every 30 seconds and continuing to heat for additional 30 second bursts until smooth. Using a fork, dip each Butterfinger into the chocolate, turning to cover completely. Take the bar out of chocolate with fork and tap lightly on the side of the bowl so that excess chocolate falls off. Place on the wax paper lined baking sheet. Continue with Butterfingers until all are dipped. (If at any point your chocolate becomes too hard to dip, simply return it to the microwave and heat for another 10-15 seconds and stir. Do this throughout the process as needed.) When all bars have been dipped, place them in the freezer for an additional 5-10 minutes. Enjoy.

You know what negative people need? A BIG OLD BITE of this cake shoved right in their mouth to sweeten them up! When they come up for air, shove another bite in! Hey, come to think of it, if y’all have any negative or grouchy people in your life, you really should make them this cake today. Honestly, surprising them with this cake might just turn them around. It would at the very least cause them to take pause and look at you in a renewed light. Killing folks with kindness really does work. I swear it. I’ve tried it and been successful every single time.

Where was I? Oh yes. While the cake is still hot, pour the caramel/condensed milk all over the top and spread it around evenly. Then let it soak in. Oh my good lord almighty, this is gonna be good.

Crush your butterfinger bar.
I had to look at this a minute before I was able to figure out what it was. At first, I thought Stacey had sent me a photograph of a bowl of cereal for some reason.

Sprinkle 3/4 of butterfinger crumbs over cake. Now let it cool a bit. I stick mine in the fridge at this point.
Waiting is really hard because I have got you wanting to eat it real bad at this point, don’t I? Oh just wait, it gets so much better and you have to wait even longer! Oooh, now look whose being negative?
Alright, let me rephrase in a bright and chipper Mary Poppin’s voice “Oh just you wait, although it may still be a while until the cake is ready, the wait will be rewarded with such a delicious delight and you will have earned it through all of your selfless hard work! You’re such a good person for making this!”.
That was bette

Warning: I think I hit more tangents than usual in this post. Recipe is at the bottom if you wanna skip through the interesting tidbits about my family, negative people, my dish envy, and complaints about my kitchen.
Looking over some of my past posts, I noticed I have a habit of going on and on about how I love everything I post. Thing is though, I DO love everything I post. If I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t share the recipes with you because I want you to love everything I post, too!
Alright, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, let me start posting about this cake by saying: I LOVE THIS CAKE!!! Furthermore, EVERYONE LOVES THIS CAKE!! Grown men swoon for it, Children polish their halos and change their vocabulary to “mother dear” for it. No cake I have ever had in a restaurant holds a candle to THIS one.

THIS is the ultimate in decadence and….guess what else? EASE! This is the easiest cake on earth to make. Never have you stopped a show with so little effort.
This recipe came from my sister in law, Stacey. Stacey married into our family about ten years ago. We kind of feel sorry for her from time to time, being married into our brood and all, but since she had been a guest at my sleepovers as far back as third grade, she clearly came in with her eyes wide open. She has learned to adapt quite well to the vast quantities of food we turn out everytime someone blinks funny and she has resigned herself to the possibility that being married to a Davis is not conducive to making it back to that size zero bikini. She has also done the one thing that we all must do eventually: learn to cook just like Mama.
Stacey is a GREAT cook. Thing is, she didn’t cook at all for the first half of their marriage (she was a working mom). Once she quit her job to raise the spawn of Bill (my two sweet nephews, but spawn of Bill sounds better), she took up cooking and made up for lost time. Now Stacey makes the best fried apple pies in the state and she frequently spends a day making twenty or so full sized cakes for my brother’s catering jobs.
Still, as good a cook as Stacey is, her shining contribution to our family’s good eatin’ will always be The Butterfinger Cake. Did you hear an angelic choir when I said that? Butterfinger Cake. There it was again!
You will need: Devil’s Food Cake Mix (The cheaper the better, we want a good old coarse cake), Can Sweetened Condensed Milk, Caramel Topping, Cool Whip, Butterfinger Bar
My brother, Bill, took these pics and Stacey made the cake. She has such a large, open, bright and sunny kitchen. Not that I’m jealous or anything. I love my 6×8 dungeonesque walk in closet with appliances. Really, I do. ~Sighs~

Prepare cake according to package directions. When it comes out, poke holes all in it with a fork, just like we did on the Elvis Presley cake. Don’t stop til it looks like a swarm of four toothed mosquitoes attacked!
Dang, I didn’t know Stacey had the Fire King 9×13 dish. Those were issued in 2000 and didn’t stay on the market long. I got a bowl, but never the dish. I really want the dish now. :(

Last night, my blogging buddies Porcelain and Cardboard from the awesome Design Boner tagged me with a virtual holiday gift. Isn't the Erich Ginder Ghost Tree Rack, $1,700 from Design Public, just perfect? Thanks, guys -- I love it!
Now it's my turn to gift some of the blogging friends I've made this past year. I've never met any of these ladies (or gents) in person, but I feel they're all kindred spirits. More importantly, they inspire me, educate me, entertain me, and make me laugh every single day. (And it's thanks to them that I can never seem to get any work done.)

Please note that the relative price of these items has nothing to do with my affection for each these bloggers.

First up, of course, has to be my Design
Boner peeps:

After nearly three days and plenty of pitches, our list of 30 hungry startups was trimmed down until there were only seven startups left standing: Expect Labs, Gyft, Lit Motors, Prior Knowledge, Saya, YourMechanic, and Zumper. Their task? To take the stage one last time in front of our amazing panel of expert judges — Mike Arrington, Roelof Botha, Chris Dixon, Eric Eldon, David Lee, Marissa Mayer, and David Sacks — to undergo even more intense scrutiny.

The deliberation was a lengthy process, so let’s not beat around the bush any longer: This year’s TechCrunch Disrupt SF winner is YourMechanic!

YourMechanic — which is sometimes pegged as being the “Uber of car maintenance” aims to streamline the process of getting your car fixed or serviced without having to leave home. Using either the YourMechanic website or mobile app, users can quickly describe what the problem is (even in vague terms like “smell in the car”), find a local mechanic, and work out the payment details.

According to the YourMechanic team, the service’s independent, insured mechanics are able to handle about 80% of car issues without having to lean on the expensive amenities found in shops. That ultimately means lower prices for the consumers that use the service, and more money going into the pockets of the mechanics that actually do the work. The service has already struck quite a chord, as it’s locked up $1.8 million in funding from Y Combinator, Yuri Milner, Andreessen Horowitz, Lerer Ventures, CrunchFund (disclosure: TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington is a general partner of CrunchFund), SV Angel (disclosure: judge David Lee is managing partner of SV Angel), Paige Craig, A-Grade Investments, Jawed Karim, Justin Waldron, Joshua Schachter and Kevin Freedman.

It has finally arrived. The Nestle Crunch Girl Scouts Cookie candy bar has finally hit store shelves and the commercials have hit the mainstream.
Pictures floated around for a while, as it was but a mere rumor. Then it got real as pre-orders for the candy bar were made available by Nestle Crunch.

The three flavors that seem to be available are some of the girl scout cookie favorites: Thin Mints, Caramel and Coconut (AKA, Samoas), and Peanut Butter Creme (AKA Tagalongs).

The commercial which has been aired on TV, shows a girl scout warning a Crunch vendor to be careful while stocking the candy bar. Soon after, a mob of customers rush the display and nab the crunchy bar.

The Crunch Facebook page has provided a map to help find the nearest store that is selling the Crunch bar.

Do notice that the commercial states that they are available for a limited time only.

If you missed the last wave of girl scout cookies, this might hold you up until the cookie-selling troopers return.

power crunch proto whey
High-DH hydrolyzed whey protein is the most advanced, fastest-absorbing whey protein in existence. Unlike other forms of protein, it has been enzymatically broken down for quicker, more complete absorption. Since the body absorbs and retains more of the protein, it provides greater nutrition than whey isolates, concentrates, soy, casein, or blends. But all hydrolysates are not equal. Only high-DH (Degree of Hydrolysis) hydrolyzed whey protein can deliver this level of extraordinary benefits. Beware of other “hydrolyzed whey” products that have added whole proteins or amino acids and that don’t list the level of di and tripeptides as these products will not deliver the same benefits as a “High-DH hydrolysate” like Proto Whey.

Superior Protein Nutrition
High-DH whey hydrolysate with DTP technology means quicker, more complete absorption. With Proto Whey, your body absorbs and retains more of the protein, providing greater nutrition and health benefits than whey isolates, soy, casein or protein blends.

Not all proteins are created equal
Greater nutrition and health benefits than whey isolates, soy, casein or protein blends? No question! Greater nutrition and health benefits than other whey hydrolysates? Absolutely! Only Proto Whey offers a High-DH whey protein hydrolysate with higher levels of di and tri-peptides. Beware of other hydrolyzed whey products that add whole proteins or amino acids and don't list di and tripeptide levels.
DTP - Your cells will love you, your body will thank you
DTP® stands for Di and Tri Peptide and it is our proprietary protein technology. Through the process of hydrolysis we are able to break protein down into chains of two and three amino acids, called di and tri peptides. These specific sizes of proteins are easily absorbed and provide better nutrition than whole proteins and single amino acids. Our DTP delivery system provides rapid and complete protein absorption, which is unique in the protein industry. Other protein sources and powders absorb at a fraction of the rate Proto Whey absorbs. So while other products may be cheaper, in the long run, if you’re only absorbing a fraction of the protein in them, a lot of money is going to waste. That’s why Proto Whey is the only protein you can trust to absorb quickly and completely.
